How-To Guide
How to sign out of iCloud before selling your iPhone
Leaving iCloud signed in makes your iPhone unsellable. This step-by-step guide walks you through backing up, turning off Find My, signing out of Apple ID, and erasing your device safely.
Signing out of iCloud is the single most important thing you can do before selling your iPhone. Skip this step and the phone becomes locked to your Apple ID the moment the buyer tries to set it up. That means a worthless device, a stalled sale, and a lot of avoidable hassle for everyone involved. This guide covers exactly what to do, in order, so you sell with confidence and your buyer gets a phone they can actually use.
Why iCloud sign-out matters so much
Apple's Activation Lock is built into every iPhone running iOS 7 and later. When Find My is turned on, Activation Lock ties the device to your Apple ID. After a factory reset, the phone will demand the original Apple ID and password before it can be set up. There is no way around this, and Apple will not unlock a device without proof of ownership. A buyer who receives a locked iPhone cannot use it.
Activation Lock also directly affects your sale. At Cash My Tech, we inspect every device before payment. A phone still tied to an Apple ID will fail that check. Your payment will be held and we'll contact you to resolve it remotely, which delays everything. Sorting this out before you post the phone takes a few minutes. Sorting it out afterwards, once the phone has left your hands, takes much longer.
Step 1: back up your data first
Before you do anything irreversible, make sure your photos, messages, contacts, and app data are safely copied somewhere. You have two options.
- iCloud backup: Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, then Back Up Now. Your phone needs to be on Wi-Fi. Wait until it finishes.
- Computer backup: Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC. On macOS Catalina and later, open Finder and select your device. On Windows or older macOS, use iTunes. Click Back Up Now.
For a more detailed walkthrough of both methods, see our guide on how to back up your iPhone before selling. Do not skip this. A factory reset wipes everything permanently.
Step 2: turn off Find My iPhone
Find My must be disabled before you can sign out of iCloud. If you try to sign out with Find My still active, iOS will ask for your Apple ID password to disable it at that point anyway. It is cleaner to turn it off separately first.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Toggle Find My iPhone off.
- Enter your Apple ID password when prompted and tap Turn Off.
Once this is done, Activation Lock is lifted. The phone can now be erased and set up by someone else.
Step 3: sign out of your Apple ID and iCloud
With Find My off, you can now sign out completely.
- Go to Settings and tap your name.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off (this turns off Find My one final time if it was not already off).
- Choose whether to keep a copy of your iCloud data on the device. For a phone you are selling, this does not matter as the next step erases everything anyway.
- Tap Sign Out, then Sign Out again to confirm.
Your Apple ID is now removed from the device. The phone is no longer linked to your account.
Step 4: erase all content and settings
This is the factory reset. It wipes the phone back to its original state, as if it just came out of the box.
- Go to Settings, then General.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
- Confirm by tapping Continue, then Erase iPhone.
The process takes roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The phone will restart and display the Hello setup screen. At that point it is ready for its next owner. For more detail on this step, see our full guide on how to factory reset your iPhone before selling.
What if you have already posted the phone?
If you realised after the fact that you forgot to sign out, you can still remove the device from your Apple ID remotely, provided the phone has an internet connection.
- Go to appleid.apple.com on any browser and sign in.
- Under the Devices section, find the iPhone you sold.
- Click on it, then click Remove from Account.
Alternatively, open the Find My app on another Apple device you own, select the iPhone under Devices, and choose Remove This Device. Once removed, Activation Lock is cleared and the buyer can set the phone up without any issues. Contact the buyer to let them know, as they may need to perform a fresh reset to see the change take effect.
What if you forgot your Apple ID password?
Go to iforgot.apple.com and follow the account recovery steps. Apple will verify your identity using your trusted phone number or email address. Once you have access to your account again, follow the steps above. If you cannot recover the account at all, Apple Support is your only route as there is no bypass for Activation Lock.
What Cash My Tech does with your data
Even after a factory reset, we perform a certified data wipe on every device we receive. Our process is in line with UK GDPR and the WEEE Regulations 2013, so you have a documented record that the device was properly erased. This is separate from and in addition to the steps you take before posting. It is not a substitute for signing out of iCloud, since we cannot remove your Apple ID for you, but it gives you an extra layer of assurance that any residual data is gone.
